Overview
Threaden Arc is an independent book-cover design studio offering exclusive premade covers and custom design services for authors.
I developed the business and its digital storefront from the ground up, bringing together product strategy, visual identity, e-commerce implementation, and operational testing.
The objective was to build a real, functioning business rather than a conceptual portfolio exercise.
The Challenge
Create an e-commerce business with a differentiated product offering, manageable operating costs, and a customer experience that could be supported independently.
That meant deciding what to sell before designing what the storefront would look like.
Finding the Right Business Model
The project began with research into several e-commerce approaches, including supplier-based retail, original print-on-demand products, and digital creative products.
Each option was evaluated against practical considerations: margins, fulfillment requirements, differentiation, and operational complexity.
Exclusive digital book covers offered a promising alternative to physical retail.
A premade design could be sold once, personalized for its buyer, and delivered digitally, eliminating shipping and physical inventory while making design quality central to the product.
Building the Brand Experience
Threaden Arc was developed around a simple promise:
One design. One author. Never resold.
The visual direction pairs warm ivory, charcoal, deep teal, and restrained gold accents with editorial typography and expressive cover artwork.
The experience was designed to feel like an independent creative studio, balancing atmosphere and storytelling with straightforward product discovery and purchasing.
The initial collection includes nine exclusive premade covers, incorporating both AI-generated imagery and non-generative-AI artwork, including an original hand-painted piece.
Designing the Purchase Experience
One of the most important decisions was how customers would personalize their covers.
Rather than requiring a separate exchange after purchase, I implemented product-level fields that capture the book title, author name, and optional subtitle before checkout.
That information travels with the purchased product into Shopify's order administration.
Each premade also uses tracked single-unit inventory to support the one-customer-only sales model.
The customer receives a personalized ebook front cover, while the business retains a simple, manageable fulfillment process.
From Design to Operation
The Shopify implementation brought together:
Responsive storefront and product-page design
Exclusive premade inventory controls
Product-specific personalization fields
Digital-only checkout
Payment processing and sales tax configuration
Custom-cover inquiry workflow
Customer notifications, policies, and licensing information
Domain configuration and public launch
The result is more than a visual storefront. It's an operational system designed around the way the business actually fulfills orders.
Testing Before Launch
The complete purchase process was tested using simulated Shopify transactions.
Testing confirmed that personalization details reached the order, applicable tax was calculated, digital purchases required no shipping, and inventory decreased after a successful purchase.
The sold-out state and custom-cover inquiry workflow were also tested, alongside mobile presentation and customer notifications.
These tests helped validate the customer journey before accepting live orders.
The Outcome
Threaden Arc launched on October 20, 2026.
The live store opened with nine exclusive premade designs, a custom-cover inquiry service, and a tested purchase and personalization workflow.
The project demonstrates end-to-end digital production: connecting commercial decisions to brand experience, technical implementation, and operational readiness.
As a newly launched business, customer acquisition and commercial performance remain areas to measure, rather than results to claim.
What This Project Demonstrates
Successful digital projects require more than a polished interface.
Threaden Arc brought together research, commercial judgment, creative direction, e-commerce development, and quality assurance to turn an initial business idea into a live customer-facing experience.
